Chapter 9: Modesty
To me, this is one of the most important characteristics of a good leader, and yet it is so often overlooked and undervalued. Managers with a sense of humility are easier to trust and respect than managers who have an self-centered or self-serving attitude. A manager who puts themselves ahead of the company will certainly put themselves ahead of you as well. This type of attitude makes for a tense work environment because nobody feels supported. Alternatively, a manager with a sense of modesty is one that employees know they can depend on for help and guidance, because they know that their manager is serving the good of the company before themselves.

I agree with Aimee, this is often a quality that is overlooked but that is very important in a manager. One reason that was not mentioned above but I think is connected is that managers who are modest or have a sense of humility often have more invested in cultivating their subordinates. Managers who are not solely focused on their own self worth or career are more likely to take the time to help others succeed, and rarely take the credit for the job they do.
ReplyDeleteI think this was perfectly said. I couldn't agree more with your statement about mangers who put themselves before the company will put themselves before you. I these managers could use some of the suggestions from chapter 11 from the North American business'.
